Natural Bridges, 9/3/10

Some scenes from the day--photos by Wendy Naruo
This morning's Santa Cruz Bird Club field trip to Natural Bridges
found a good variety of birds, despite a foggy beginning. One
of the highlights came when we were at the West Cliff Drive
entrance, listening to ELEGANT TERNS "keerick" out in the
fog, and trying to see one. Then one of the terns came to us,
flying in over our heads, followed by an immature PARASITIC
JAEGER. A spectacular chase followed (see top center photo
in the collage above), the tern speeding around, making abrupt
twists and turns, and the jaeger following its every move, before
they moved back offshore and into the fog again. A couple of
Western Gulls were also involved in the chase, but had nowhere
near the maneuvering ability of the jaeger. Down on the beach
and at the Moore Creek Lagoon, we found a good variety of
shorebirds, including great views of a cooperative juv.
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER (bottom center in the above collage).
There were also 6 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES,
2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, Westerns and Leasts, Sanderlings
and Black Turnstones, a Greater Yellowlegs, etc. Three
nicely-patterned juv. BLACK-CROWNEDNIGHT-HERONS
also flew in and foraged by the lagoon (among 5 members of
the heron family for the morning.) A good variety of the regular
passerine migrants, a swarm of Selasphorus and Anna's
Hummingbirds, and good views of several species of raptors
were among the other highlights of the morning.
