Antonelli Pond and Natural Bridges , 7/16/10

Antonelli Pond had nothing too notable this morning, so we
moved on to Natural Bridges, where highlights included
close comparisons of Least and Western Sandpipers,
a California Gull in very fresh juv. plumage,
and some good looks at Vaux's Swifts.

Moore Creek Preserve, July 2, 2010

A surprise on this afternoon SCBC field trip  was a
WESTERN KINGBIRD working along the fencelines near the
Vernal Ridge trail in the northwest part of the preserve, and just to the
west, probably the same one that was lingering there a couple of weeks earlier, but quite unexpected in Santa Cruz in July. We missed Black Swift this time, but there were 2-3 VAUX'S SWIFTS among the numerous swallows. Two GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were singing in the grasslands in the later part of the afternoon. A COOPER'S HAWK caught something northwest of the preserve border, and carried it off into the forest along Wilder Creek to the west, and one WHITE-TAILED KITE flew over in the late afternoon.
