January 15, 2010 Natural Bridges area

This Santa Cruz Bird Club field trip visited Natural Bridges State Beach and Antonelli Pond. The beach at Natural Bridges was well supplied with shorebirds, including 22 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, about 35 SANDERLINGS, 6 WHIMBRELS, 4 MARBLED GODWITS, about a dozen BLACK TURNSTONES, and the usual SPOTTED SANDPIPER at the lagoon. The sheltered side of the Natural Bridge had 10 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS and 2 SURFBIRDS. We also had some nice comparative studies of MEW, CALIFORNIA, and RING-BILLED GULLS. A NUTTALL'S WOODPECKER was among the "usuals" in the northeast part of the park. At Antonelli Pond a male HOODED MERGANSER was among the highlights. Other ducks included 3 COMMON GOLDENEYES, along with Ruddy Ducks and Mallards. A cooperative MERLIN posed for a close study in a cypress on the west side of the pond. The SWAMP SPARROW was still north of the pond, calling several times from the riparian undergrowth, but it never came even close to being in open view. A couple each TURKEY VULTURES and WHITE-TAILED KITES were flying around west of the Homeless Garden
